When fired, the sabots fly off by centrifugal force and, therefore, the small projectile has the same power behind it as a shell twice its size and weight. 
. In this context the term sabot doesn’t refer to a wooden shoe as earlier. It was a device that ensured the correct positioning of a bullet or shell in the barrel of a gun. It was attached either to the projectile or insider the barrel and fell away as it left the muzzle.
